I’m not the best

We come complete with one true note we were destined to sing… And it doesn’t dictate your choice of job; what it dictates is how you do it.
— Caroline McHugh

When I made a living as a designer I felt like an imposter.

Probably because I’m not the best designer.

I’ve never been to design school, or even studied Art or Design at any level.

I felt like I blagged a career and would get found out. Even after doing it for 10 years. Lots of others I worked with were way more talented than me.

Then I started running my own business. Apparently I was now an entrepreneur.

But I’m not the best business person. I had so much to learn.

A few years later I started delivering workshops and hosting events.

But I’m not the best teacher or facilitator.

Then I got asked to speak at events. But I’m not the best speaker.

Then I started coaching. But I’m not the best coach.

Now I’m trying to write my first book. But I’m not the best writer.

Sometimes I wish I did one thing well. But deep down I know I’d miss the variety.

Sometimes I’m a designer, entrepreneur, teacher, facilitator, speaker, coach and writer.

Some might call it being a jack of all trades.

Or just doing what needs doing as well as I can.

So what am I the best at?

Me.

I’ve been studying hard for 48 years.

It just doesn’t help when someone asks ‘so what do you do?’.
